I guess that to improve the economy..we shud have more foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country. Mauritius should aim to be one of the most successful platform for FDI. Mauritius is considered to be the hub of Africa..but there are some proposed measures to be taken in order to make Mauritius more attractive. For example bureaucracy shud be reduced in Mauritius..too much paper work is seen.
With strong support from the GOM, a number of projects in the following sectors are expected to be implemented, shortly: (i) Land-Based Oceanic Industry, (ii) Knowledge Industry, (iii) Renewable Energy, (iv) Agro-Processing and biotechnology, and (v) Logistics and Distribution.
In terms of property registration, it takes some 7 months for property registration is as far as i know . In response to this problem Mauritius should most probably introduce a fixed fee to be paid when registering a property instead of a percentage of that property’s value, which will make it much cheaper, and along with that impose statutory limits to the amount of time needed to process applications. Also, standardisation of purchase contracts and making it available online would further reduce the amount of procedures and time.
The access to credit by investors is also an issue that needs to be tackled. Mauritius is ranked 84th in the ‘getting credit’ indicator and has to better its position in order to be in harmony with its other capabilities. The changes that have to be brought are in terms of sharing of information, whether negative or positive, among creditors (e.g. financial institutions) so as to facilitate the access to credit for firms or individuals, and additionally it should be easy for the same creditors to recover their dues in case of default. Another improvement that is needed is in terms of Mauritian legislation which is considered to be too slow.
